Alternative names : Computer numerical control (CNC) machinist
Machinists work in mechanical and welding workshops in mining company facilities. Their role is, in particular, to fabricate or modify components and products to repair equipment on the mine site and improve its efficiency. Based on their observations, they take precise measurements to prepare a drawing of the equipment component to be fabricated, or use technical drawings from the manufacturer. Machinists use various tools found in a mechanical workshop, such as lathes, milling machines and grinding machines, and program various commands on the machine tools used to cut metal as indicated on the fabrication plan. When the machine tool has completed the sequence programmed, machinists make checks and adjustments before using the new component to replace a broken or worn part.
- Some activities require the frequent lifting of heavy loads.
- The working environment may be dusty, noisy or hard to access.
- The work may require fine muscular control for the adjustment of high-precision machine tools.
