Heavy equipment operator
Alternative names : Surface mining equipment operator
Heavy equipment operators operate various pieces of heavy equipment, such as loaders, graders, backhoes, excavators and dump trucks, mainly for construction and production work in open-pit mines and quarries and the handling of ore and materials. They can perform on-site tasks such as snow removal, earthmoving, road maintenance and grading, and fuel delivery. They perform preventive maintenance and routine repairs. They also carry out checks before using heavy equipment, clean and lubricate it, and fill the fuel tank. The operators of over-sized heavy equipment must establish visual markers, check their blind angles frequently as a matter of course because of their limited field of vision, and develop the ability to hear instructions transmitted by radio on an ongoing basis.
