Alternative names : Metallurgical engineer
Metallurgists direct studies of the properties and characteristics of metals and minerals, and design and test machinery and processes to concentrate, extract, refine and treat metals, alloys and other materials. They are responsible for optimizing ore treatment processes, the concentrator, tonnage and waste recovery to ensure profitability. They ensure that objectives for production, metallurgical yields, operating costs, health and safety and environmental protection are met. They assess the viability and feasibility of the solutions and programs proposed, and draw up reports, budgets and recommendations. They take part in sampling campaigns in order to characterize process equipment. They analyze the results and verify their validity and quality. They supervise metallurgical technicians and work closely with them.
